Dr Lirpa Sloof immigrated from Madras (now Chennai), India and studied Chemical Engineering at University of Nevada, Las Vegas. After obtaining her doctorate, she began working in the Nevada mining industry. She started her own mining business but turned to real estate and development when lands intended for mining outside Las Vegas came into demand for new casinos, malls and houses. It was in this area which she made her fortune.

In 2000, Dr Sloof started the Lirpa Sloof Foundation in order to give back to the community which helped her build a new life here. The Foundation promotes science and technology research through donations to universities and, more recently, grants to support amateur research projects.

Dr Sloof has a preference to make contributions which give a project a significant boost toward its goals, like the real estate market in Las Vegas did for her.
