The Lirpa Sloof Foundation is pleased to announce the 1st Quarter 2004 Sloof Amateur Project Grant goes to the SpamAssassin Project, an Open Source software project based in Sydney, Australia. The grant is in the form of six full-rack co-location sites located in Sydney, San Jose, Denver, Altanta, Boston and Amsterdam, each with 20 Opteron-based servers and 5 terabytes of disk storage.

In announcing the award, Dr Lirpa Sloof, founder of the Sloof Foundation, said the SpamAssassin Project provides a unique defense against abusive spam e-mails. "We were impressed by both the comprehensive nature of the software and the opportunity for self-training afforded to volunteers by the nature of the Open Source development model." This grant will allow SpamAssassin to perform more computationally-intensive analysis of spam e-mails and test defenses against large volumes of spams.

The grant includes creation of an account to be managed by the Foundation which will cover costs of the co-location sites, professional backup services, hardware maintenance and periodic upgrades.
